We were contacted by a client who had some issues with their mosaic hallway floor. At one of the doorways, there were loose and damaged pieces- a common problem with floors of this age and type. Also, as the house had been extended from the hallway, there were now two doorways adjacent to each other where the pattern no longer matched and the customer wanted a more coherent appearance to the design.
We started by carefully lifting all loose pieces to retain as much of the original floor as possible. Then all damaged sections of the subfloor were chopped away and relaid.
Once that had dried sufficiently, the tiles themselves could be replaced. The first doorway was re-tiled in its previous design, using original and reclaimed tiles where possible and replica pieces if not. For the two doorways together, a design was agreed with the client that was sympathetic to the original floor, but gave a much more balanced and symmetrical appearance.
When the new tiles had been set and grouted in, the entire floor was stripped of all its existing surface coatings, then given a deep clean. The floor was then left for a period to fully dry out.
Once the moisture in the floor had dropped to a suitable level, we returned to re-seal the floor, apply a satin wax dressing and give a final polish in accordance with the clients wishes for the end appearance. The floor had now been restored to its former glory and will look good for years to come.
